To begin, this is a forum that discusses art, poetry, and beauty; this is not an outlet to discuss controversial topics. Nonetheless, you don't seem to care and you've taken it upon yourself to post against the guidelines. For that reason, I will take it upon myself to respond to your blatant and inappropriate opinion.
As a Muslim girl living in America, I can't say I've seen the worst of it. However, I have seen lots of it and I believe that I will continue to see lots of it- racism, that is. I, too have been on the outside and the inside of the religion. I am 14 and I have experienced things second-hand as well was first-hand. The two years that I have been in public school, my peers have called me terrorist and have gone against what I preach. A classmate has insinuated that my religion was dangerous and harmful. My family, among many other families, has faced many racist incidents, especially my siblings in school. However, it's important to admit the fact that I do have a lighter skin tone and I usually pass off as white. People that don't yet know my religion but have met me sometimes confide in me and make racist jokes. In other scenarios, people who do know my religion will make 9/11 jokes and ask me questions like: "How is your camel? Oh, you don't have a camel? Well you surely have a goat then!"
Growing up in a Muslim private school in which I attended for 11 years, I learned plenty of information about the religion and I can assure you it is a religion of peace. Though, I don't think my claim is enough to enlighten your unsophisticated opinions.
Perhaps it is a good idea to take a look at the greeting in Islam: Assalmu Alaikum. Which translates to: Peace be upon you. The reply, Wa Alaikum Asalam, which translates to: And upon you, peace. This greeting has been used for centuries upon centuries and it isn't a mere few words that modern Islam has put into place. This greeting advocates for peace itself and the word "salam," peace, is present within the greeting. Instead of using meaningless words to greet one another, the religion uses harmony and unity to define those who are greeting and being greeted upon.
Personally, I became too nauseated to finish the video and had to stop it at around the 3 minute mark. I couldn't bare to hear the awful opinions of that woman and I don't understand how anyone could. In the society we live in, people of Islamic faith are all around. How hard can it possibly be to to indulge in a simple conversation about the true, honest beliefs? It seems to me, though, that you have indeed had conversations on this topic; why else would you bring up a completely irrelevant idea? To get things into perspective, you have decided to listen to one woman who has apparently seen the "inside and outside of Islam," but you refuse to believe the hundreds of people who are fighting against her opinion and fighting for the belief that Islam is peaceful?
As a student in Stagg, which I assume you attend, Muslim students are constantly arguing that Islam is peaceful and evidence is provided.
Assume someone asks: How do you know that Jesus was killed on the cross? The proper response would be: Well, it's all in the bible.
So when someone jumps to the conclusion that Islam is not peaceful, one should say to look no further than the Quran.
“God does not forbid you from being good to those who have not fought you in the religion or driven you from your homes, or from being just towards them. God loves those who are just.” (60: 8)
"God loves those who are just," the verse entails. Surely, those who follow religion do it to please God and gain his love. This verse is stating that those who are fair, moral, and harmonious will gain the love. This verse is describing that those who are kind to the ones who may not be so kind to them will be glorified and loved in the eyes of God. For this reason, I am not insulting you as a person nor do I ever insult people. My religion explicitly goes against that.
Just as a "heads-up" if you will, the internet is a great source to find information and you should look into it more often. See with just a few clicks of a button, I've discovered that the speaker in this video has in fact "mellowed" her opinion and has stopped criticizing the religion as a whole, and instead criticizes a small group of Muslims in Medina.
Do not come after a religion unless you know what it fully entails. Do not come after my identification and attack it when you don't really know what it includes. You can not fix what was never broken.
Wait, proof of what?
